Quick How-To: Changing Tires for New Drivers

Getting behind the wheel means you’re ready to take on whatever the road throws at you, including a flat tire. Tubeless technology considerably reduces the risk of flat tires but does not eliminate it entirely.

When a tire, even a tubeless one, catches a nail, the air inside will gradually leak out without you realizing it. In a few days, you could end up with a flat tire.

What should you do if this happens while you’re on the road? Well, change the tire yourself using a spare right away. That’s why you need to learn these simple tricks.

Loosen Your Lug Nuts

To remove the flat tire, you first need to loosen the lug nuts with a lug wrench. You’ll usually find this tool in your trunk, as car manufacturers include a tire kit with every vehicle.

Place the lug wrench on a nut and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Repeat for the other nuts until you can easily remove the wheel.

Jack Up Your Car

Once the nuts are loosened, jack up the car. First, locate the jack point.

Before raising the jack, place the spare tire under the car near the flat tire. If the jack slips or can’t support the car’s weight, the spare tire will help prevent further damage.

Raise the jack until the flat tire is off the ground and there is enough space to remove it.

Remove the Flat Tire

With the flat tire lifted, remove the loosened lug nuts completely using the lug wrench.

Keep the nuts in a safe and accessible place. Pull off the flat tire and mount the spare one in its place.

Check Your Spare

Before installing the spare tire, ensure it’s in good condition and properly inflated.Mount it onto the hub and partially tighten the lug nuts by turning the lug wrench clockwise. Don’t fully tighten the nuts yet; secure them enough to hold the spare in place.

Remove the Jack

After replacing the tire, carefully lower the car until the spare tire rests on the ground.

Fully tighten the lug nuts one by one. Store the jack, lug wrench, and flat tire safely in your trunk. See? Changing a tire is easy. Remember, though, that spare tires aren’t meant for long-term use.Head to a repair shop as soon as possible to get the flat tire patched or replaced.
