Due to their high value, exhaust catalysts are frequently targeted for theft. Thieves often sell the metals extracted from these catalysts on black markets, through online platforms, or by shipping them overseas.

A media outlet in the United States reported a 540 percent surge in exhaust catalyst thefts in 2022. Over the last three years, the number has escalated by as much as 2,200 percent.

In carrying out their actions, thieves often target the undercarriage of cars, especially vehicles with high ground clearance, such as SUVs and pick-ups.

Hybrid cars are also attractive targets because they have two catalytic converters and are less prone to corrosion, making them more valuable. Surprisingly, thieves can complete the theft in just a few minutes.

The theft of exhaust catalysts is highly detrimental to car owners. Replacing a stolen exhaust catalyst can cost between IDR 3.5 million and IDR 8 million, which is a significant financial burden.
