Landing Craft Transport (LCT) is used to carry cargo, heavy equipment, and people from a large ship to land or vice versa. It serves the same function as a ferry.
Despite the similarity, an LCT has a more robust structure, and it can sail across shallow waters. In addition, it can be moored to a land, shore, or quay with no specific loading and unloading facilities.
With its better structure, function, and ability, LCT is an important means of transport to sail across the sea in various sectors, such as construction and defense.
Its hull is solid and flat that it can carry heavy loads on its deck. Besides, its ramp or hydraulic door can be raised and lowered, making it easier to load and unload.

Other vital components are its propulsion engine, navigation system, and safety equipment. There are various types of LCT to serve multiple functions and needs.
Conventional LCT. This type of cargo is used to carry heavy and short loads. It can also be used to carry construction materials, such as stones, sand, or iron. It is the most used LCT.
Amphibious LCT. This type of LCT can be used on land or shore with no quay. Its propulsion system is so robust that it can easily land on the coast, perfect for military operations or transportation in remote areas.
Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) LCT. Its ramp allows cargo and vehicles to be loaded and unloaded easily, such as cars, trucks, or heavy equipment.
Self-propelled LCT. It has its own propulsion engine and needs no additional barge. It can move faster and more easily than other types of LCT.
Modular LCT. This LCT is adjustable to meet transportation needs. In particular, its components can be separated or assembled, so this type of LCT can carry loads.
Special LCT. It is designed for a particular purpose, such as rescue, oil gathering, or research. It has specific features and equipment to address specific needs.
Diverse LCTs are crucial for the logistics industry. Indonesia, where 65 percent of its territories are waters, should have had adequate quays to accommodate the LCTs.
Therefore, companies using inter-island logistics services should consider the effectiveness and efficiency of LCT as a means of transport to sail the sea, especially when it’s used to carry heavy equipment, such as excavators and dump trucks.
