The 2024 celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day is a special one. It marks this country’s 79th anniversary and is going to be the first-ever celebration to be held in the new capital city of Nusantara (IKN).
The flag ceremony is set to be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, in two locations: 1) Merdeka Palace, Jakarta; and 2) Garuda Palace, IKN, East Kalimantan.
“The ceremony in the courtyard of the Merdeka Palace follows the military ceremony in IKN. Then, the flag-lowering ceremonies are also conducted in IKN and the courtyard of the Merdeka Palace. They are the main agendas,” said State Secretary Pratikno, as quoted from setneg.go.id.
The theme of Indonesia’s Independence Day this year is “New Nusantara, Onward Indonesia”, marking the relocation of the capital city for a better and more developed Indonesia.
“The theme ‘New Nusantara, Onward Indonesia’ was released on June 24, and it shows the transition of the capital city from Jakarta to Nusantara and the transition of the current administration to the new one,” he added.

Despite the two different locations, the ceremonies are held simultaneously in the Western Indonesia Time (WIB). President Joko Widodo is the inspector of the ceremony in IKN, while Vice President Ma’ruf Amin leads the ceremony in Jakarta.
To date, the government has been rushing to complete the IKN project, particularly its infrastructure, to support the national event. In June 2024, the progress of infrastructure construction in IKN went viral because it was way behind the target.
As quoted from the official website of RRI on July 3, 2024, the Head of the Nusantara Infrastructure Construction Task Force, Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga, said that the progress was 43.9 percent.
However, President Jokowi has decided that IKN is going to host the ceremony. It received a warm reception from many people who wanted to witness the first celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day in the new capital city.
The Head of Sepaku Subdistrict, North Penajam Paser District, East Kalimantan, Gamaliel Abimanyu Arliandito, as quoted from indonesia.go.id, recently said that IKN was bustling ahead of August 17. More and more people are booking hotels and accommodations around Sepaku.
Sepaku is the nearest subdistrict, only 15 kilometers away from the ceremony venue in IKN. It is one of the four subdistricts in North Penajam Paser.

According to Gamaliel, there are 54 hotels and accommodations around Sepaku, and all of them have been fully booked from August 15 to August 19, 2024. “There is no more room to book in August 2024," he said.
News about the celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day in IKN has brought many opportunities for businesspeople in East Kalimantan, especially car rental providers. Since the beginning of August 2024, rental car bookings have doubled.
The increase results from the lack of means of transportation in IKN, which causes the government to rent hundreds of cars and buses for those invited.
TRAC is one of the car rental providers supporting the event. With over 37 years of experience, TRAC is a reputable company and has branches across Indonesia, including in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.
