Uncovering the Cause: Why Bus Brake Repeatedly Fails

Multiple Reasons for Brake Failures on Buses

Frequent bus accidents in Indonesia are mostly caused by brake failure. However, the causes of brake failure itself are still open to debate.

Some say that the brake fails because the driver overbrakes, causing excessive heat on the brake components and brake clamping force to be ineffective.

Others point to overdue bus maintenance and repairs as a contributing factor to brake failures. The brake that should be in a mint condition fails to function flawlessly.

Still fresh in our memory is the tour bus accident early last month in Subang, West Java. The bus was carrying students of Lingga Kencana Vocational High School, Depok, who were having a study tour.

It was suspected of experiencing brake failure and hitting the guardrail, causing 11 to be killed, 13 to be heavily injured, and 40 to be slightly injured.

Upon investigation, the Head of the People Transportation Division of the Central Executive Board (DPP) of the Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda), Kurnia Lesani Adnan, pointed out that brake failure can be caused by damaged brake components and overbraking.

“The bus driver frequently pressed the brake, decreasing brake capacity. Descending roads made the situation worse: the brake capacity failed to support the bus load when the driver pressed the brake, resulting in brake failure. This phenomenon is called brake fading, when brake components are incapable of functioning properly due to overbraking. Meanwhile, you can use other than a brake to stop the vehicle. This way, the brake components are maintained well. For example, you can downshift, use an engine brake, or use a hand brake,” Lesani added.

Choosing a Safe Tour Bus Should Take Precedence

Whatever causes brake failure, ensuring the rental bus’s safety for a group trip is crucial. The bus’s good look is important, but it’s not everything.

Always prioritize safety over price. The rock-bottom price offered by tour bus rental is appealing. But once you’re swayed by it, you’re risking people’s lives.
