The discussion of halal certification in logistics services is getting more attention following recent issues in food and beverage storage and distribution.
The implementation of this certification is based on the new Law Number 6 of 2023, revising Law Number 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Guarantees.
The Halal Partnership and Audit Services Director of LPPOM Majelis Ulama Indonesia, Dr. Muslich, recently said in an online conference that halal certification is based on Government Regulation Number 39 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of the Halal Product Guarantee Sector.
This regulation mandates that every aspect, including food and beverage final production, be certified before October 17, 2024.
It includes examining the raw, additional, and auxiliary materials, not to mention the services of food and beverage processing, storage, packaging, distribution (and its fleets), retailers, and presentation at restaurants/cafes/fast food stalls.

“We will examine various services, ranging from slaughtering, production, storage, packaging, to distribution. Suppose these services are still non-compliant to the certification requirements by the appointed time. In that case, they are subject to the government sanction, ranging from written reprimand, penalty, product recall, or prohibition on distributing the product,” Muslich explained.

A logistics provider with halal certification ensures that every aspect of product handling meets its standard requirements, starting from the receiving, storage, and packaging to the delivery of goods. This assessment oversees:
Hygiene and sanitation: Storage and transportation fleets should be clean and free from najasat or impurity in Islam.
Products separation: Halal and non-halal products should be separated to prevent cross-contamination.
Use of materials and equipment: A product’s packaging and equipment must be made of halal materials and remain uncontaminated.

For example, transport for livestock and its by-products must not be mixed or used alternately to transport halal and haram livestock.

Submitting the Application:
Open SIHALAL Portal: Send a certification request online through BPJPH’s Sistem Informasi Halal (SIHALAL) portal.
Prepare the documents: Prepare the company’s documents, halal policies and procedures, quality manuals, and proofs of halal practices within the company.
Submit the request: Upload all documents and submit a request through the SIHALAL portal.
Audit Process:
Document evaluation: Halal Inspection Agency (LPH) will assess the conformity of company documents with halal requirements.
Direct inspection: LPH will conduct a direct inspection of the company to ensure the implementation of its halal practices.
Certificate Issuance:
Audit report: LPH will forward the audit report to BPJPH.
BPJPH review: BPJPH will review the company’s eligibility for halal certification.
Certificate issuance: When the company is declared entitled, BPJPH will issue the halal certificate and send it to the company.
