Traffic flow during the mudik Lebaran (Eid Al-Fitr homecoming) 2024 period is predicted to be busier than previous yearsbecause the number of people returning home has increased rather significantly.
The results of a survey by the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) stated that the total number of homecomers and people traveling during the Eid season amounts to 193.6 million people.
18.3 percent of that number, or around 35.21 million people, choose to use car for their trip.

Various traffic flow engineering scenarios have been prepared by the Kemenhub, Police, and Ministry of Public Housing and Public Works (PUPR) to anticipate the worst outcomes when regulating vehicle traffic for homecoming travelers.
"We are making operational and policy preparations to control, arrange, and handle transportation comprehensively with ministries and agencies in the central government, regional governments, state-owned companies, and the private sector. "This traffic engineering will be implemented during the mudik and arus balik (return flow) of the Lebaran 2024 season," said Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, quoted from the ministry's website.
There are at least three traffic flow management systemsto be implemented at a number of areas with potentially high traffic density.
Contraflow will be implemented on the mudik and return flows of Lebaran 2024 season. For mudik flow, it will take effect from 5 – 11 April 2024, between 14:00 – 24:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), starting from Kilometer (KM) 36 of the Jakarta – Cikampek Toll Road to KM 72 of the Cipali Toll Road.
As for the return flow, contraflow will be implemented from 12 – 16 April 2024, between 14:00 – 24:00 WIB, starting from KM 414 of the Semarang – Batang Toll Road to KM 36 of the Jakarta – Cikampek Toll Road.

The one-way system will be implemented on the mudik flow on 5 - 9 April 2024 between 14:00 – 24:00 WIB. The location spans from KM 72 of Cipali Toll Road to KM 414 of Semarang – Batang Toll Road. Specifically for 8 – 9 April 2024, this system will be implemented at 08:00 – 24:00 WIB.
The system will be applied on the return flow on 12 – 16 April 2024 at 14:00– 24:00 WIB, starting from KM 414 of the Semarang – Batang Toll Road to KM 72 of the Cipali Toll Road.
Meanwhile, the odd-even license plate system will be implemented on the mudik flow on 5 - 9 April 2024 at 14:00 – 24:00 WIB, starting from KM 0 to KM 141 of the Jakarta - Cikampek Toll Road.
The system will be applied on the return flow from 12 – 16 April 2024 at 14:00 – 24:00 WIB, from KM 141 to KM 0 of the Jakarta – Cikampek Toll Road. Specifically on 13 April 2024, it’s implemented from 08:00 – 24:00 WIB. Meanwhile, on 14 – 16 April 2024, it will be implemented from 08:00 – 08:00 WIB (the following day).
This system applies to passenger vehicles, buses, and goods transportation whose license plates end with even numbers are only allowed to pass on even dates, and vice versa.

The government also limits goods transportation to avoid vehicle overcrowding or slowdown in vehicle speed on toll roads.
All these regulations must be appropriately implemented so the road users won’t experience any problems, such as delays in odd-even implementation or delays due to the contraflow system.
