Tourism Sector is Projected to Grow in 2023 in the Wake of the Pandemic

Indonesia’s tourism sector is predicted to grow in 2023. In addition to the reopening of many tourist destinations after being forced to close at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the emerging new trend in tourism also contribute to this anticipated growth.

Sandiaga Uno, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, during the National Webinar themed Paradigm of Indonesia Tourism Industry Trend 2023 recently stated that a new travel trend is rising. This trend is known as wellness tourism.

“In wellness tourism, travelers want to ‘heal’. They want to feel refreshed and have better physical well-being and emotional health.”

Sandiaga also added that people now have developed a new practice of doing their jobs where they work from tourist destinations.

“They are looking for a workplace that ensures their productivity and keeps them feeling physically and psychologically refreshed and well. This trend has been on the rise since the Covid-19 pandemic subsided. Today, this trend is increasingly commonplace. An exotic tourist destination seen as the right place for healing and working becomes a place to visit,” said Sandiaga.

The followers of such a trend are not just those living the busy lifestyle in urban areas. People from around the world follow this trend. Many even come to visit Indonesia’s tourist destinations with the purpose of healing and working simultaneously.

In 2023 Tourism Businesses Will Keep Growing

Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) shows that 3.92 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia from January to October last year. This figure has exceeded the target set for 2022, namely 3.6 million.

Another indicator that shows Indonesia’s tourism growth is the increase in state revenue. As of September 2022, the foreign exchange generated by the tourism sector reached US$ 4.26 billion, soaring ten times higher than the amount earned in 2021. It is also well above the target set at US$ 1.7 billion.

With the emerging travel trend and the tourism potential in the country, the tourism industry is expected to keep growing in 2023, even better than the growth in 2022.

The ongoing trend and tourism potential also present a challenge to the actors and related stakeholders in the sector. These include transportation companies for passengers and goods and logistics.
