Prospect of Used Car Market in 2019

Used car business is optimistic that it can record more positive growth this year than in 2018. Used car showroom under PT Serasi Autoraya (SERA), mobil88, even targets 15% growth. The reason behind this is that brand holders (APM) are not too ambitious in launching new models.

"Every year when we set the target, we always wait first for indications about new cars. So far, there seems to be limited ambition for new cars next year," mobil88 President Director Halomoan Fischer Lumbantoruan said during "Ngobrol Mobil Bekas" with journalists in South Jakarta, Tuesday (December 18, 2018).

Fischer predicted that multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) would still be the star of used car sales in 2019. However, recently, used city car, LCGC, and SUV have also seen rising trend. This means that the percentage of used MPV sales will be lower this year.

If we talked about the condition five years ago, Fischer said, MPV would be able to dominate up to 55% of used car sales. Currently, the percentage has lowered to 45%. "This is in mobil88. It's a shift in culture, from family-oriented to individual. People have started to prefer small cars," he said.

Fischer recorded that mobil88 had sold 21,000 used cars in 2018. This figure increased by 5% from 2017's 20,000 cars. mobil88's used car sales are still dominated by MPV segment. 

Fischer added that lower interest in used MPVs was also caused by hatchbacks, such as Honda Brio, Honda Jazz, and Toyota Yaris. "So, some of MPV portion was taken by SUV and small cars," he said.

MPV still dominates with 45%, followed by city car (27%) and SUV (15%). Meanwhile, sedans and other types of cars book 13%.

Fischer explained that consumers were mostly looking for cars that were priced below Rp200 million. Most of the sales were conducted in Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya.
