Government Builds Patimban Port to Reduce Burden of Tanjung Priok Port

The government is currently preparing a new port in Subang, West Java, as an effort to lessen the overcapacity in Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta. This Patimban Port in Subang is also expected to be a stimulator of economic development in the area.

"If the tender is finished in May, we can start the construction in June at the least. Half of the construction will be finished in 2019, the rest in 2020," Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said, as quoted from Finance Detik, Monday (April 16).

According to the minister, at the moment, there were three state-owned enterprises and one overseas company participating in the tender. A company from Japan was said to be involved.

Meanwhile, the Committee for Acceleration of Priority Infrastructure Delivery recorded that the investment value of the new port reached Rp43.2 trillion. The funding scheme consisted of state budget with foreign loans, regional budget, and private funding.

The construction of Patimban Port is indeed an important project of the government. This was mentioned separately by President Joko Widodo. The president emphasized that this port is expected to increase the competitiveness of Indonesia, especially in the automotive sector.

Patimban Port will have a capacity of 7.5 million TEUs, becoming the biggest container terminal in West Java. According to assessment, the capacity would be able to cope with the growth in West Java.
