Positive Impacts of Extended Eid Holiday on Tourism Sector

The government has decided that Eid al-Fitr 2018 holiday is extended to 7 days. This holiday is longer than the previous years. Despite the controversy, the decision seems to positively impact the growth of tourism sector.

Longer holiday enables people to plan their holiday in a more flexible way. It is very likely that they can spend more time than usual vacationing with their family.

"This will result in the increasing number of visitors in tourism destinations. All tourism destinations will certainly be flooded by people during the long holiday," Chamber of Commerce and Industry's (Kadin) Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Vice Chair Yugi Prayanto told Detik Finance, Monday (May 7).

People's consumption in the tourism sector will thus increase. This of course can boost the income from this sector and positively impact Indonesia's economy.

"People will use more paper money as their consumption increases," Bank Indonesia (BI) Deputy Governor Dody Budi Waluyo said, as quoted by Tempo.co, Friday (April 20).

Positive impact will also be enjoyed by players in other sectors that support tourism, for instance F&B, craft, art, and others. This is because these sectors are closely associated with tourism.

On the other hand, Dody explained that the extended holiday in general would not hamper business. He believed businesses would have provided enough stock before the holiday began.

"Production won't be affected, and consumers will still get what they need," he said.

Moreover, the extended holiday has previously been discussed with business players to ensure the smooth running of economy, as said byHuman Development and Cultural Affairs Coordinating Minister Puan Maharani.

"The government has listened to the opinion of and discussed the matter with representatives of industries, APPINDO, and KADIN, and Indonesian Stock Exchange, to ensure conducive economic conditions," Puan said.

Furthermore, people do not to worry because civil services will still run, and so do services in hospitals, telecommunication, utilities, immigration, transportation, and others.

Transportation solution companies such as TRAC under PT Serasi Autoraya (SERA) will also keep serving their customers during Eid holiday. People can use TRAC's rent-a-car service to fulfill their transportationneeds during holiday with their family.
