Eid Holiday Extended, Traffic Congestion during Homecoming Season Expected to be Reduced

The government has decided to extend Eid al-Fitr holiday from four days to seven days. This decision is expected to reduce traffic congestion during homecoming season because the people now have more flexibility in choosing when to leave.

"Therefore, people can choose the right time to go on homebound trip within the period of Saturday, June 9, 2018, to H-1 Eid al-Fitrwhich is Thursday, June 14, 2018," Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumad itold Tempo.co, Thursday (April 19).

If the holiday is not extended, people can only choose to go on homebound trip between June 13 or June 14, 2018. This will make traffic flow accumulate during those dates,leading to congestion. Then, travel time is very likely to become longer.

This becomes different when the government added more days (June 11, 12, and 20) to the holiday. People now has more dates to choose from to go on homebound trip, from Saturday, June 9, 2018toJune 11, 2018, which falls on Monday. Moreover, some people may choose to go on Friday night, the day before.

This prediction is in line with the mapping of homecoming season by the Transportation Ministry about people’s habits when going on homebound travel. This research was done to ensure that the traffic during homecoming season will be smoother than in previous years.

"People prefer to go on homebound trip two to three days before Eid al-Fitr. That is because the holiday is short," the minister said.

When the holiday is extended, the habit automatically changes. People have more options to choose when to leave. 

Nevertheless, the minister advised people not to leave two to three days before Eid al-Fitr because it is very likely that the peak of traffic congestion happens on those days.Therefore, people are expected to be wiser in choosing the right time to go on homebound trip.
