Topics to Avoid at Workplace Conversations

A workplace is where employees not only perform their professional best but also build interpersonal relationships with fellow employees.  With a great work culture, it’s not impossible for employees to excel at both aspects.


Nothing beats casual talks for building workplace relationships. Employees can tell stories that are mostly not about their jobs.


The variations of topics are endless. They range from recommended restaurants, alternative routes to the office with no traffic jams, and hobbies to current trends and news.


But remember that there’s is a limit to everything. Normative issues are probably the safest topic to talk about, particularly if you’re not close to anyone else.

Religion

Despite a common conversation topic, it’s best to avoid talking about religion in the workplace. Don’t discuss your religion nor give any opinion on other people’s religions.


Religion is a deeply personal and sensitive matter. While it’s perfectly fine to express pride in your faith, it’s important to remember that not everyone shares your religious beliefs.


Politics

Some people are highly sensitive to political views,particularly around the election times. Don’t talk about this topic extensively in the workplace.


It’s OK to support a certain candidateand equally understandable to hold negative views about others. The most important thing is never to persuade your colleagues to align with you because it can annoy them.

Personal issues

You can talk about personal issues only with someone you trust. Talking about such issues at the workplace may lead your colleagues and superiors to question your performance.


Or worse, everyone there will gossip about you. So, refrain yourself from doing it.


Career aspirations

You may think of your current job as a stepping stone. Talking about your intention to have a better job at another place may lead your superiors and colleagues to question your loyalty.


You have to perform well when joining an organization. Your superiors will know that you want a better career through the organization. If you plan to move to another company, don’t express such a plan until you’re ready to move.


Those are the topics you should avoid talking about at the workplace. Instead, talk about positive topics that can strengthen relationships and bring happiness to everyone.
