A Simple Guide to Weighing Your Shipment

Shipping services are the best solutions for businesses, both large and small, to deliver products to customers efficiently and reliably.

However, it’s crucial for shipping service users to understand the rates and calculation of goods volume to ensure accurate shipping costs.

Typically, all items to be shipped, regardless of the mode of transport (land, sea, or air), are weighed, and their volume is calculated.

How to Calculate Shipping Costs

There are two methods to calculate shipping costs. The first method is based on the actual weight of the item, which is used when the weight matches the size and shape.

For lighter but larger items, volumetric weight is used. This is calculated using a specific formula to determine the shipping cost that the sender needs to pay.

Actual Weight Calculation

To calculate the shipment weight, the actual weight in kilograms (kg) is used. This involves weighing the item you’re sending.

Keep in mind that the weight shown on the scale might not be the exact number. Therefore, the weight is typically rounded off by the staff.

For example, if an item weighs 8.12 kg, it will usually be rounded down to 8 kg. However, if it’s 8.76 kg or more, it will be rounded up to 9 kg. The rounded weight is then multiplied by the shipping rate for the destination.

Volume-Based Calculation

The second method involves calculating items based on volume. For land and sea shipping, the calculation differs from air shipping. Each has its own specific formula.

For land and sea shipments, goods are weighed. Then, their volume is calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height in centimeters and dividing the result by 4,000. The resulting volumetric weight in kilograms is multiplied by the applicable rate for the destination.

For air shipments, the rate is calculated by measuring the dimensions (length x width x height in centimeters) and dividing the result by 6,000 to get the weight in kilograms. The result is then multiplied by the rate.
