The amount of vehicle tax varies just like any other asset. For car tax, it is stipulated in the Regional Regulation No. 2 of 2015 on Motor Vehicle Tax (PKB).
The PKB is calculated by multiplying the vehicle’s selling price by a weight factor that reflects the road damage and pollution it causes.
The calculation is divided into two: (1) annual tax and (2) a five-year tax. If the purchased vehicle is new, an additional new car tax will be imposed. You can check the car tax online through Samsat Online.
There are three kinds of vehicle taxes: new car, annual, and quinquennial taxes. So, want to know how to calculate your tax? Let’s break it down.

You might be surprised by the high first-time tax on your car, but don’t worry, it’s just for the first year. After that, the taxes will be lower. This is due to the costs of making the Vehicle Number Plate (TNKB) and issuing the Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK).
The tax calculation includes Vehicle Registration Tax (PKB), Mandatory Contribution of Traffic Accident Fund (SWDKLLJ), TNKB, and STNK fees. The initial tax is 2% of the vehicle value. However, if you’re buying a used car, you’ll have an additional fee for transferring ownership.
The details only apply to the first year. For subsequent years, you’ll only pay the SWDKLLJ, PKB, and administrative fees. In addition, the PKB amount decreases yearly as the vehicle’s value depreciates.
To calculate the first-year vehicle tax in more detail, here’s what you need to know:
You’ll need to pay a Transfer of Motor Vehicle Ownership (BBN KB), which is 10% of the car’s price.
The PKB is 2% of the vehicle’s market value.
You’ll also pay the SWDKLLJ of Rp 143,000,
the administration fee for TNKB of Rp 100,000, as well as
the administration and issuance fees for the STNK of Rp 50,000 and Rp 200,000, respectively.

How much is the annual car tax? The tax only includes PKB and SWDKLLJ. Here’s how to calculate it:
The SWDKLLJ of Rp 143,000
PKB is 2% of your vehicle’s value
The administrative fee of Rp 50,000.
Calculating the quinquennial car tax isn’t difficult, and it’s similar to the first year. The costs are also about the same. Here’s how to figure it out:
The SWDKLLJ of Rp 143,000
PKB is 2% of your vehicle’s value
The administrative fee of Rp 50,000.
The verification fee for STNK of Rp 50,000.
The issuance fee for STNK of Rp 200,000, respectively.
the administration fee for TNKB of Rp 100,000, as well as
PKB for the quinquennial tax is usually lower due to the car’s decreasing value. If a new car costs Rp 230 million, it might be worth Rp 190 million after five years.
So, you’ll calculate 2% of Rp190 million for PKB, not Rp 230 million, which is Rp 3.8 million. Therefore, the total tax in the fifth year is Rp 3.8 million, plus SWDKLLJ of Rp 143,000, making it Rp 3,943,000.

Aside from the tax itself, there’s a fine for late tax payments. If you’re late, you’ll pay 25% of the total tax amount for a full year.
However, If you’re only late for a few months, the fine is calculated proportionally. For example, if you’re 6 months late and owe Rp 364,200 for PKB and Rp243,000 for SWDKLLJ, the fine is calculated as follows: Fine:
(Rp364,200 + Rp243,000) x 25% x 6/12 = Rp 394,575
Total of PKB and SWDKLLJ: Rp243,000) x 243,000 = Rp 607,200
Total amount to pay: Rp1,001,775.
That’s how you calculate new, annual, and quinquennial taxes, including fines. Knowing these calculations will help you prepare for your tax payments. Remember to have your Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK), Proof of Motor Vehicle Ownership (BPKB), and your ID ready.
