Check Out the Easy Ways to Overcome Car Overheating on Your Mudik Trip

Car Overheating During Mudik Trip? Don’t Panic

If you want to use a private car for homecoming or mudik trip, one thing you need to be aware of amid the bustling traffic is the potential for your car engine to overheat. This can happen because car engines need to always be on when navigating the crowded roads.

What’s more, the road traffic for the mudik and arus balik (return flow) during the Eid al-Fitr or Lebaran 2024 holiday is predicted to be busier than previous years. It’s understandable, because a survey by the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), 193.6 million Indonesians said they would go home or travel when Eid arrived.

Moreover, 19,4 percent or 37,51 million people said they would take buses. Plus, 18.3 percent or 35.42 million people said they would go by private cars and 16.07 percent or 31.12 million people would take motorbikes. The roads are bound to be congested this time based on the numbers above.

5 Ways to Fix An Overheating Car

Don’t Panic

In case of overheating, don’t panic. Keep yourself calm to overcome the problem. The first step you must do is to turn off the car AC. With the AC still on, the load that the car needs to bear becomes heavier.

Next, steer the car to the side of the road and turn off the engine. Then, immediately open the car hood to release the heat. The engine temperature will immediately decrease gradually. Afterwards, wait until the engine temperature cools down.

Check The Radiator After the Engine Cools

If the car's engine temperature is completely cold, check the radiator. But remember, never open the radiator cap when it's still hot, because the liquid in the hot radiator might spurt out and scorch parts of your body.

When the radiator cools down so you can open the radiator cap and the fluid reserve tube, check whether there is enough radiator fluid. If there’s not enough, add some fluid and check the radiator parts for fluid seeping or dripping.

Add Radiator Water

In addition, check whether there are any leaks in the cooling system.  A leak means a problem with the cylinder head cooling system. On the other hand, check the engine block for leaks if there is no leak in the cooling system.

Moreover, if you find a leak, immediately fill the radiator with sufficient fluid and drive the car slowly to look for the nearest repair shop. Leave the repairs of the radiator or other parts that cause engine overheating to an expert technician.

In fact, anticipating the possibility of problems with the radiator is the key to maintaining and preparing the car as good as possible, before using it for mudik trip. However, if you don't have time to check and maintain your car, it's best not to speculate.
